We've all seen it and heard it. The most unoriginal joke of all when people are told that someone is pregnant but they aren't. It's a 'joke'. Seems irrelevant to most but to others it's extremely hurtful. To me, it's just plain stupid and the most over used April Fools joke in history. I can't believe anyone still falls for it. But here's the thing, to women who can't have children, who just lost a child, who have had miscarriages, who were born without a uterus, who have gotten their tubes tied and greatly regret it but can't afford to have it reversed, who are struggling with infertility, who are trying to conceive through a surrogate, who got pregnant on birth control and can not raise their baby so they are painfully placing them up for adoption, who would give just about anything to see a positive pregnancy test and have a healthy baby, pregnancy jokes hurt them. As if the pain of their struggle isn't enough others ignorantly add to that pain by blasting an unoriginal fake announcement all over social media. I have personally been through some of the things that I mentioned above and no, those jokes don't hurt me but I am human enough to understand that it does hurt others therefore I won't do it. There are literally a billion other jokes that you can do. Be original. Be thoughtful. Be smart enough to know how dumb that joke is.
If you are going through struggles to grow your family, my heart breaks for you and my prayers are with you. I can't control what others joke about on this so called holiday but I can promise that I will never joke about it or make light of pregnancy, period.
